Our Reading program is an individualized intervention program for struggling readers. Beginning with a one-hour comprehensive assessment to determine instructional goals, our qualified staff will develop a specific program based on student needs.

Created by Dr. Robert Prazer and his vision therapy staff, our program gives students with histories of reading delays the training they need to read effectively by using research-proven methods. Instruction begins at each students' reading ability and is dedicated to assist students in practicing and gaining the skills needed to advance to the next level.

Taught by dedicated instructors, our curriculum allows students to develop increased reading proficiency and build confidence. Our program consists of one-on-one instruction and each program is tailored to the students diagnostic assessments.

Through our individualized lessons, students will find that reading is more automatic, allowing more energy for comprehension instead of word attack.  We love to see how our readers transition from learning to read to reading to learn!
At Wexford Academy we provide students with the skills they need to succeed as readers and develop a love of reading.

Staff

Lois Karran-Lois joined Wexford Academy as a Vision Therapist in January of 2009.  She graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelors degree in Education with a major in Elementary Reading and a minor in Science.  Lois then earned her Masters in Education from Slippery Rock University with an emphasis in Reading in 2007 and was recognized as the top graduate student in her field. She is certified as a Reading Specialist (K-12), as well as in Elementary and Early Childhood Education. Lois also has extensive training in Integrated Visual Learning techniques.

Before joining Wexford Academy, Lois taught at the Elementary level for more than ten years. Her interest in working with students that have reading difficulties led her to obtain a Master’s Degree and then train as a vision therapist with Dr. Prazer. Lois’ experience and training in reading remediation enables Wexford Academy to offer patients specialized reading intervention to follow or coincide with vision therapy.

Writing Program
Our Writing program is an individualized course designed to help students reach their full academic potential. Our qualified staff will develop strategic writing lessons based on each student's needs and interests.

Created by Dr. Robert Prazer and his reading staff, our program gives students strategies they can use to become life long quality writers. Our lessons help students learn more about the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing and publishing.  Spelling will also be refined and old overused vocabulary will be replaced with more vivid language. Skilled teachers will show students how to use techniques such as thinking maps to compose multi paragraph papers.
